Great episode Rick. In the UK we had the fusion of dance music and rock. Check out Screamadelica, The KLF - The White Room, 808 State - ex:el, Massive Attack - Blue Lines and one of my all time favourite bands Teenage Fanclub and Bandwagonesque (check out what Kurt Cobain says about the Fannies). Coupled with everything that Rick says we had one hell of a indie music scene in the UK.

I think that its a shame that you see the movie just as a jazz movie, its about the relationship of a obsesive student and his abussive teacher, or coach if you like. This kind of relations can develop in any activity, have you seen basket coaches in europe? they are mean as hell. Or olympic athletes? I think that those kind of teachers are fading away but there are still some out there. But there is a sense of reason to withstand the abuse, in the movie he is the most elite teacher in the best music school of the united states, so he is his ticket to absolute stardom in the jazz world. And it ask the viewer how much would you do for a shot to glory? You might say that the trailer didn't convince you, but that goes for unknown movies, but this one was highly regarded to the point that maybe you should ask yourself if there is more to it than what the trailer shows...

First off, love your videos and learned a lot but I think you are a little off base here. I've certainly had conductors who psychologically manipulated musicians and even ones who were borderline abusive. Making musicians believe they are "on the bubble" is common. My son is a great musician but told me that his music director told him that he didn't deserve to be in one of his ensembles. I explained that this is what they do to get students to work harder. When I was in music school decades ago we had a resident artist who got away with murder because neither students, faculty nor administration dared cross him. Whiplash takes this to extreme lengths. Would any conductor be able to able to get away with what Fletcher did? That is what the movie is all about. Sure, there are things in the movie that will make musicians cringe but then again car racing fans cringe at "Driven" and soldiers cringe at "The Hurt Locker." A perfectly accurate "day in the life..." movie won't sell a lot of tickets.

You don't have to know what Bensons influences were (Montgomery, Charie C. etc..)to like or "understand. I liked Benson as a kid and didn't know this. I liked Coltrane when I was kid. I liked Art Tatum. It all appealed to my ADD brain. I always got bored by pop music's repetition and formulaic approach.

I grew up in the 1970’s. Local studios started to pop up. It would take an entire day to record a single song due to the skill levels of the players. This was not LA, NYC or Nashville. Add the beer and pot and it made it worse to get an acceptable product.

Jesus Rick, you're missing the point. It's character study with Jazz band as the backdrop. You're missing so much context by not seeing the movie. Of course the trailer would look absurdist to a musician. Simmons also won an Oscar for his role. You're entitled to your opinions but you should give the movie a try.

Tones of amazing textures and edge of you’re seat solos. Doubt you could play this solo. Fast but melodic with lots of bends. This is a must hear for all guitarist with Rod Morgenstien, Professor at Berkeley on drums.

First time through, bluetooth headphones, it all sounded the same. I forgot that the signal is being compressed to send to the headphones. Took a second try using the speakers on my laptop. I got 2 right, and they were semi-educated guesses. Dug through drawers until I found some really crappy wired ear buds and tried a third time. This time I got 6/6. Some of the tracks there was a clear winner to my ear. Some of them, however, I have to admit I was using gut instinct to tell the difference between the wav file and the 320k mp3. With the ear buds, though, I could easily hear the inferiority of the 128k mp3.

A "capacitor" is NOT a coil!!! A "capacitor" is essentially the opposite of a "coil" "A capacitor is created out of two metal plates and an insulating material called a dielectric. The metal plates are placed very close to each other, in parallel, but the dielectric sits between them to make sure they don't touch. Your standard capacitor sandwich: two metal plates separated by an insulating dielectric."

Rick, you have the wrong end of the stick on this one, pal. J.K. Simmons is the kid's ego! The instructor is a personification of the kid's own fears and doubts. An actual band leader wouldn't say such things, but the inferiority-creature parked on the kid's shoulder commenting on his every move would.
