The cracking on the back is a result of its shape and density. Think about it, what does an object need to do to stop a bullet? Disperse its energy. All the energy from the impact is transferred through, and across the surface in a circular pattern, of the object you hit. As the energy travels further away from the impact less damage is done to the surrounding material. The denser a material is, typically the better it is at dispersing impact energy though this isn’t always the case. Now, here’s why it cracks on the backside. You merely needed to aerosolize the gas so the stoichiometry (ratio of the parts in a reaction) is more of an air-to-gas particle surface area balance to get your fireball.
